"A gift for one of my clients, yaar... It’s been a long time since I've got an order from him... This thing cost me 20 grand... probably I'll get a huge order after I give it to him"
"20 grand! What the hell is it?"
"Its an iPod..."
"I pawd?"
"Arey... you dunno or what? iPod is the new Macintosh Walkman... you don't even need audio casettes."

iPod is the 'Macintosh' Walkman???

Hi Its me again. Thot i spied you yesterday - but of course it had to have been a false alarm. Whats up wit u? I am looking forward to a family reunion shortly :) At least now i will be able to have some intellectually challenging conversations :) Cant say i havent kicked the habit yet!

Surprising the guy called it Macintosh Walkman... and not Apple!
Musta been a freelance graphic designer..only i doubt if those types can afford gifting expensive Walkmans! ;-)

On a different level, an ex-colleague while buying the latest iBook and iPod for 84 grands as a combo deal (Apple Student and Teacher project, he teaches at an institute), was told by Apple guys back in Bangalore have run out of stock! Not for iPod, but iBook! Didn't know they can outsell their stocks in India!

It wasn't surprising... it was funny... he probably knew that it was the same dudes that got out the Macintosh... May be didn't know they were called Apple :)

It was all the more funny because he called it a Walkman. Only a Sony is a Walkman... It's like saying 'I love Kit Kat Cadbury'... or may be, calling all photocopier machines Xerox :)

With regards to outselling stocks, I think most dealers place orders for the hardware once you've committed to buying it... It wouldn't make sense for them to stock iBooks especially since it means storing slow moving products... though I'm not absolutely sure this is how it works... May be (and surprisingly, if so) Apple must be really outselling their stocks in India.

With regards to the guy... no, he isn't a freelance graphic designer... From what I could infer from his conversations he seems to be a supplier of PC hardware.

Naah, Savio, I reckon it was surprising. An iPod would have markings of Apple..as it's called 'Apple iPod'. For someone to refer to it as Macintosh..is somewhat akin to same one to refer to Microsoft XBox as Windows XBox.. which clearly would mean the someone in question is a PC and Windows user.

That's how, it seems logical that the Macintosh referrer should have been a Mac user, and most likely of them are graphics people! *Investigative mode off*

Regarding Macintosh Walkmans (or..should it be Walkmen?), haven't you heard of Henkel Surf, a Yamaha's Honda, Cielo Maruti et al? :)

May be the name Apple slipped him completely and he used Macintosh synonymously... Whatever be the case it was gaffe...

Shucks! Even discussing this makes me feel nerdy... much ado over nothing really :)

BTW, did you hear of Pepsodent Colgate? :)

Btw, on my daily commutes I am increasingly noticing two-wheeler riders wearing 'Nokia' Helmets. The logo is exact. :)

The truth is I can't... but yet I choose to do so. Why? Fug knows... Mebbe its just a ploy... if I ignore work for too long mebbe it'll go away.

With regards to Nokia helmets, it probably still a Delhi phenomenon... haven't seen any here just as yet.
